I was told that leaving your computer on all the time would extend the life of it as booting up is what causes the computer to get worn out , so to speak. I was also told to turn the monitor off to help save it. It made sense to me , but I now have a little problem with it. Some times when I bring it back to life the Cap Lock will be on but the light does not come on. If I hit the Cap Lock key the light goes on and the Caps turn off and the Lower case letters come on. "Sometimes" Say I want to enter the internet and I have to enter my user name and password. Sometimes it will be OKay and other times I will have to turn the Cap Lock on to turn the Caps off and then when I go to enter the paswword it will have switched. It has been doing this for about a week now and I can't figure it out. Can any of you?

Is the computer actually going into hibernate mode ? Hibernate mode is notoriously problematic and is known to do screwy things to your computer as it essentially shuts down and consumes as little power as possible. Then when you bring it back up, certain devices may not function as they were previously until you reboot. I would turn off hibernation mode alltogether and have it spin down the hard drives or the monitor instead (though that can cuase problems too)

Overall i keep my computer on all day and night. My office computer has been up for 3 weeks now without a reboot, though will prob need one tomorrow now that I said this.

I do though turn my monitor off every night

Hi Grinler,
Thanks for the info. That was about the same conclusion I had come to. I had only upgraded to Win XP about 3 months ago and really thought it was great, and then this happened. I guess I'll go back to my old routine and keep it on all day and then shut down at night. I have been doing that for years now with no problems. thumbup.gif

nekela,

Just remember to "close all Tags".

There's a "button" to the right that will do that, or you can simply type the BB code,

Hi Koan,
I am pretty dumb about these things. I tried removing it , but it didn't work , so you say type in the BB code. What is the BB code?

nekela,

You are not dumb by any definition of the word. Just not familar with the BB code used to post here. Take a few minutes and play with it in the "tests forum. Use the preview to see what your post will look like.

Just remember, every time you open or initiate a BB code you must close it for the coding to take effect.

Scarlett has shown you a screen shot of where to see the entire BB code for this site.

regards,
~Koan

Darn! I sure wish I was more articulate to be able to explain this system.
That's Why I'd asked others earlier on to write a tutorial about this system!!

[BB code]TEXT[/BB code]

That's about as simple as I can explain it.

Nuts!
