Gibson Research have been around for years and run a programme called SHIELDS UP which will try and get information from your PC. The tests take only seconds and you get a full summary of results.

Go to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2, scroll down and click proceed. Test 'File Sharing' 'Common Ports' and 'All Service Ports'

The results may delight, or dismay, you but at least you will know how secure or vulnerable you are.

Yeah, this is pretty popular. I use it every week. But I'm sure this has been posted elsewhere.

WELL, don't waste your time, while you're there.

Steve has written some really neat little programs to block or fill holes in your PC's security.
Windows XP is like a tea strainer.....full of holes. Steve's little programs plug up many of those holes.

You can easily download the programs from his site, or get them all in one easy to download package from
My Download Site.

In their 'packaged' form, they are very easy to archive or share with friends.

I love some of the names he picks for his programs, like "The Decombobulator" or "The Mouse Trap".
Got mice? Run Steve's Mousetrap to find out. I've included the M$ fix for "Mice", in my package.
Steve did not include it on his site. (if he did, I didn't find it)

Run the Firewall test and if you're not 100% in Stealth mode....you got some work to do.

If you carefully follow all the valuable information in the forum, and execute it, then it would be difficult NOT to pass the Gibson Research test.

I done the common ports test and 21 and 80 are open, the rest are either stealth or closed. What does this mean exactly from a security point of view.tks

I am brand new to this forum, and am still wet behind the ears, but could you provide more information? Like what set up you have (network, single comp, router installed, which firewall, what settings is your firewall on, etc.) It might help to explain why those are open.

Its a single PC and uses a router provide by ISP for BB. The firewall is ZA, the settings are fairly standard, I didn't really touch them. Can provide more info if you want but not too sure what I am looking for.
