256 Ram Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 My computer seems to have "lost" it's two CD-ROMs (CD-ROM,CD-RW) When I boot up it doesn't see them. When I look in -- Control Panel/System/System Properties/Device Manager it doesn't show CD's but under Hard Disk Controllers it shows three entries: 1. Intell®82371AB/EB/MB PCI Bus Master Bus Controller 2. (exclamation mark in yellow bubble) Primary Ultra ATA Controller 3. (exclamation mark in yellow bubble) Secondary Ultra ATA Controller If I try to "Install New Hardware",the Add New Hardware Wizard shows the devices in the list as (exclamation mark in yellow bubble) Primary Ultra ATA Controller (exclamation mark in yellow bubble) Secondary Ultra ATA Controller Highlighting either one and going to Properties says that Device Status is ....This device is either not present,not working properly,or does not have all the drivers installed. Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. If I try upgrading I'm told that the best driver is already installed. What should I try next?? Thanks for any help! Sharps4570@bresnan.net |

What has changed recently? Have you installed any new hardware... Hooked up devices with memory cards?

Try disabling or un-installing points 2 & 3 in device manager then shut-down your machine.
Remove the IDE cables from your 2 CD Rom's and start up again. Check your device manager.....you shouldn't see any yellow question marks any more then shut down again. Make sure you have one CD Rom set as master and the other as slave. Start up again and make sure you have "Auto Detect" enabled in the bios. Your machine should detect and install them automatically. PS.....I would install them separately. Hope this helps. JTH

A couple weeks ago I installed a PCI eVGA 64M video card, with installation going smoothly. Shortly later Internet Explorer started failing. Removed card and returned to the motherboard video. Everything seemed to be working except the CD's. Jack: (Ever did so many things you forgot what some of them were?? That's where I am now) Best I can remember: tryed what you said - did not work. When I removed the three device driver entries: (a bubble said I had to remove all three) 1. Intell®82371AB/EB/MB PCI Bus Master Bus Controller 2. (exclamation mark in yellow bubble) Primary Ultra ATA Controller 3. (exclamation mark in yellow bubble) Secondary Ultra ATA Controller disconnected the CD ribbon Cables and (complete) rebooted the three entries reappeared in Device Manager. Back where I started. I AM thankfull for the help ---- but what now ?? Sharps |

Something tells me that you may be having some driver problems. You have installed/removed many different components, but you have not mentioned anything about uninstalling the drivers.
Would you mind d/l Everest Home? It is free, and from the link, you can decide between the self-extracting EXE file or the ZIP file. This program will tell you everthing about your computer-down to the bytes, literally. When you open this application, click Report, check Custom select ->next, uncheck all checkboxes except for the first one (Everest-report), and Computer. Check the little + next to Computer, and check the first entry, summary -> click next. Select Plain text, and when the report comes up, highlight the entire report (click anywhere on it and press CTRL+A), right-click in the highlighted area, and select copy. Right-click the text portion of your reply, and select paste. -------------------- We are all curious like a cat. We wonder, we ask, we learn.

Also have you checked all the cables? Could you have pulled a cable (power, ide) by accident when removing the video card?

I want to thank all who helped me on this. Best guess is that it was a driver problem but can't tell because I got fed up and reloaded Win98. Problem went away.
