I have done everything that was suggested here, using AVG 7.5, Lavasoft, SuperAntiSpyware, Tuneup Utilities, CCleaner and Diskeeper. I also use Zonealarm and Avast. Yet the computer is more sluggish than ever, particularly with online functions like IE and OE.

Would appreciate help in debugging this problem!

Many thanks. ohmy.gif

Zone Alarm is good for protection, as is sygate and keiro (all free firewall / anti-malware) programs.

But seriously, if your computer is already slow the best option is to do a clean-reinstall... and be really careful the next time you go surfing the web.
Otherwise, yeah, do a bunch of sweeps, clean up your regedit, and work in SAFE MODE! I found a pretty good guide that Id recommend, its the link below.

Note to wishmd:

Don't use both Zonealarm and Avast, usually one is enough, and disable as many icons in the system tray as you can.

One of the major factors in how slow your computer runs is how many Threads it loads at startup / Type Ctrl-Alt-Delete and check out that number... There's a few words on programs that can disable threads listed here: http://pcfriendly.weebly.com/

Good luck mellow.gif

very good suggestions all of them, this last week i have been very suprised to see two PC's running XP that were supplied brand new with only 256mb RAM which is ludicrous, surely 1 gig should be the minimum with 2 gig recomended, not enough ram is the single biggest reason for a computer running slow !.

using these programs are a big help.

however the very first step is to stop as many programs as possible.

The first thing I do is 'Start, Run, Msconfig'

under the startup tab there is a nice button 'Disable All', click this, Apply and reboot.

This will get you a little more speed to run something usefull.

Then use 'CCleaner' to clean all temp files. this can be downloaded from www.filehippo.com

QUOTE(divot @ Dec 27 2006, 09:50 PM) *
My computer moves unusually slow is almost every program, but I notice it mostly when I am on the internet because that is what I am mostly doing. I have followed all of the advice I have found on this and other websites and nothing seems to be working, does anyone have any additional suggestions?

Perhaps defragging would help, I am not completly sure how to do this, can someone help.

two more? ideas you might try. One is start using Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/) and then download and install "WOT" from the Add-ins (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=wot&cat=all) . Also if you download and purchase (29.00 for life)and USE "BillP studios" WinPatrol You will find the programs that are slowing your computer down. you can also create a Hijack file to post on bleeping compuiters using WinPatrol You must purchase to be able to use the PLUS button and that is it's best feature for learning about your computer and what those annoying ZoneAlarm pop up's mean. Also a program called CClean (used to be called crap cleaner) used in conjunction with the windows clean up program (start, run, cleanmgr.exe ) does wonders to find old files that are just bogging things down. ! Then run defrag (start, run, "defrag C:") or in MyComputer, right click on C:\ drive , go to properties, then tools and click on all three buttons; one at a time checking both of the options under "Check now". The only other advise I would give is---- Do the above, often and make sure you have a good antivirus and Firewall program. Purchasing one in a suite is pretty cheap insurance. Just don't think that the protection is iron clad. Read EVERY pop up before you click !!!!! I hear rumors they have improved, but I would still stay away from any that have the words Symantec or norton or even mcafee. in the names. If a program has to "give it away" with a new computer in order to get people to buy it six months later, probably is not the best there is! personally I like ZoneAlarm and the Trendmicro products. But then I tend to buy their upper end programs and save money by subscribing three years at a time.
By the way, you are already way ahead of the curve if you have joined bleeping computers. Get "Roboform" to remember your password so two years from now when you have a new computer ,,, you will still have your user name and pass word for bleepingcomputer

Try using just one antivirus and one firewall. Keep your favorite and Uninstall the others. You may see a major improvement.
