When posting your problem, do not run and post a ComboFix log. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.

To receive help, you should instead provide a detailed description of your problem, detailed word-for-word error messages that you are receiving, screenshots of strange behaviour, and your operating system. This information is much more useful to our helpers than a ComboFix log.

Our Dell Computer with Windows 7 has a virus. We've had a couple of System Tool-like viruses in the past that we were able to get rid of (the most recent in late May '11, which I faced with help from here - Thank you!), but this time the protocol for System Tool that we were referred to last time

seems to break down when we try to download the RKill line at step 8. We keep getting a "download failed" box.

So it's time to ask again how to proceed. Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me.

One of the things that convinced us the downloading of RKill hadn't taken was that I'd click on MBAM and nothing would happen.

I can get a flash drive at my work tomorrow, I think. I also have a MacBook laptop; if I use the MacBook to download the RKill program onto the flash drive, should it work on the Dell computer.

One other thing that seemed irregular: In Step 7, where it says to unclick the checkbox for the proxy server to the LAN, we found the box already unchecked. It didn't seem to make any difference whether we left it that way, or checked it and then unchecked it again. Is that significant at all?

This should be fine.

This is a checking step.. we need to see if the malware "checked" it.
That would prevent downloads.

If you still have trouble ry to run ESET first.
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.

  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.
