any way out of this? Ive read a few "guides" on how to fix this but to no avail. Im not trying to lose all the data on this machine

dell inspiron 1705
windows xp media center edition

I woke up and my laptop was on a black screen that said:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vgaoem. fon

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

I of course cant locate the original setup disc
reebooting brings you to the same screen.

Well...it is a "known issue" but there are thousands of those in Computerland.

Dell doesn't seem to provide any specific way of dealing with these errorss...so my guess is that you have default to MS guidance.

I don't see a solution posted that doesn't require a MS XP CD, other than the iffy HP support page.
