My budget for the new computer is: Under $1000 unless going with a 13"MBP
What are the primary uses for this computer (IE: mail, web browsing, programming, games, etc)? I am a Information Technology student first, then a musician/DJ. I'll use the laptop for internet, games, programming, sound design.
What software do you intend on using on the computer? Not sure on what is required for IT field besides programming utilities. Besides that I'd like to use either Reason or Ableton for my digital audio workstation (DAW).
Do you play games? If so, what type of games? I like shooters but usually stick to the xbox for them. Would like to be able to play Diablo 3 when it releases though.
Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it? I have several programs open simultaneously but usually involves email and web browser.
Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer? I store a lot of movies, music, and pictures.
From a musicians standpoint I think I'm cool with what I need because the software synths require massive amounts of RAM. My main concern is can I get a Mac for my music stuff but still be able to function in the IT world professionally? If not what are suggestions for laptops. Right now I'm looking at the lowest end Dell XPS 15.

I am studying Information Technologies (first year) and I will be purchasing MacBook soon (mainly, because I am web designer and I don't play games at all, only Starcraft 2 which is available for MacOSX). I heard that many "sound designers" found the Mac OS X easier to work with (from hardware and software side). So, prolly the Mac is perfect for school and beatmaking both.
