I made a mistake, I know better but I did it anyhow. I ordered two DVD burners from Newegg without checking the specs, and when they arrived they were for SATA connection instead of IDE. I called the computer shop I use to see if they had the adapter to make them work, and they said they don't recommend using one - too many problems with it. I was wondering if anyone here has any experiences using them, or opinions about using them. My intentions were to put one in my Wifes old Compaq Presario machine, and keeping one as a spare.

On the bright side of my error - the computer shop said they would do some 'trading' for the units - which is good for both of us.

The best option is to add a SATA controller.

I thought that IDE drives weren't manufactured anymore, but Newegg still sells them.

To elaborate slightly: Get a PCI card with SATA ports on it, and plug the drives into that.

If it looks like I know what I'm doing, there's a pretty good chance the only reason for that is because
I once asked someone to run chkdsk /r and a BC Advisor smacked me in the back of the head.

You can try the PCI card suggested above or return the drives for the IDE ones. ASUS and LG are probably the best brands for ODDs.

Thank you very much for the ideas and suggestions.... this is a new learning experience for me. Appears to me that everything is going to SATA?

I don't know about Neweggs return policy, but given that the 2 DVD burners are only about $20 each, it would probably be more of a hassle/expense than it's worth. After all, it was my mistake.

So.... since the computer shop has offered to 'trade' burners with me, that seems to be the most viable option for me right now.

I have attempted to use an adaptor before, without any real success. Long story short, it didnt work and I was out more money then it would cost to purchase a PCI to sata converter like what has been recomended. If the store will swap them with you thats fantastic. Newegg should return them as well, but depending on what policy their covered by you looking at paying return shipping plus a 7% restocking fee.

may i add something? i use a pci card in my pc and its been brilliant, it has two ide and two sata and only cost a tenner, i run a sata hdd and an ide rom drive. hope this helps.
