BleepingComputer.com: Need help with setting up secure update

I have a couple anti malware, virus, etc... programs that can be configured to use a proxy connection for there update modules. Most of them already have the port 8080 set as default But how do I set up the host "proxy"? I don't like the idea of using some random proxy server from proxy lists sites cause those are way too vulnerable to being set up by data thief's. And there is no reason to ever pay for a proxy service since it's just a waste of money. So how does one find reliable and safe proxy servers and connections and where are they?

Shouldn't all updaters for any program be proxied or encrypted automatically nowadays? Seems kind of the easiest way to avoid your programs from getting corrupted or compromised.

I believe you are misunderstanding the purpose of the proxy in this case.

A proxy is also used in organizations to provide Internet access to workstations and servers. In these organizations, the network is designed as such that you can't access the Internet directly. All computers that need Internet access, need to connect to a special server that has access to the Internet. This special server is known as a proxy.

The proxy settings you talk about are there for this proxy, this special server that gives you access to the Internet.
It allows these AV programs to also work in a corporate environment where you don't have direct Internet access, but need to use a proxy server.
They are not designed to be used with anonymous proxies.

Most AV companies digitally sign their signature updates, you don't need to setup a special encrypted connection to protect updates.

I see, thanks for explaining that. I know you tech junkies hate explaining these kind of things to noobs over and over again but I really appreciate it! So what about programs that allow you to use anonymous proxies such as downloaders and the like. How are those set up?
