Help
so my grandfathers xp machine has gone kaput... he was updating his garmin... he said he got a message about a registry key being corrupted... quite sure garmin had nothing to do with it. long story short when he rebooted it came back deactivated and now it won't authenticate. i've tried using the key on his sticker and have got nowhere. i've called microsoft and they told me it'd be $38 to speak with a human. when using the telephone activationit couldn't validate the install. i'm using the key that was given to him with the pc. kind of at a loss at the moment. considering backing up and reloading... but i don't want to spend 8 years looking for drivers anyone think they know what i should do. no i'm not asking for a free key...

This is something you need to work out with Microsoft.
Funny...I've activated about 5 times telephonically for one reason or another...never had a single misstep, whether automated or human interface.

sigh... i've activated several times over the telephone... not this machine but several several others... this is the first time i've encountered it telling me it couldn't authenticate the installation code that was generated. i do believe it has something to do with it being at SP3 and the key was made at sp2 i believe... it may have nothing to do with it... i loathe pro/mce they give the worst headaches... i'm gonna try repairing the installation of windows to service pack 2 and then see if it'll let me authenticate then... if that don't work. FML and pro i'm wiping it and putting home on it and calling it a day...

Just a thought:
The XP MCE install media that is currently being used may be tagged (via PID) for a different license; i.e. OEM, VLK, Retail etc. The type of Windows install will dictate the activation key that will be accepted. If one were studious and had the "I wanna do it!" attitude, this hurtle can be cleared in as little as five minutes.
If original XP MCE media is being used, the COA key should be accepted regardless of Service Pack.
Edit: I, too, have activated many installs by phone. I have never had the opportunity to purchase support from an actual MS employee: Windows either activates or it does not.
