1. Java applets on webpages work in Firefox but not in Internet Explorer.
2. Java Plug-ins are showing in IE's Manage Add-Ons window as "Enabled".
3. Old versions of Java were removed and the latest version is installed.
What could be causing Java applets to not work in Internet Explorer while they work in Firefox?

Go to manage Ad-Ons in IE like you did before...

Click TOOLS
Click MANAGE ADD-ONS
Click Toolbars And Extensions
Make sure that all the Java (Publisher is Sun Microsystems) items in the list are set to ENABLED
This time in the left column under Show: make sure that you select "All Add-Ons"
If any are "Disabled", enable them.
If they are all enabled, there are probably two identical entries for
Java Plug-in 1.6.0_30
Some people have had success by disabling one of these (I have a machine here with both enabled and it works fine so don't know about this fix).

The three items there are all enabled; they are:
Java™ Plug-In SSV Helper Version 6.0.300.12
Java™ Plug-In 2 SSV Helper Version 6.0.300.12
JQSIEStartDetectorImpl Class Version 6.0.300.12
It looks like there is a duplication of the Java Plug-In SSV Helper.
Remember that everything seems to work in another account even with IE.
I will log off and log in on the other account and look at the
Java group in Toolbars & Extensions of that account to see if the gives me a clue.

on my usual user account (where Java does not run) with those on my
admin account (where Java does run) and they are all identical although
the groups are in a different order.
My usual user account has admin privilages just like the admin account.

I had not selected all add-ons. Below is the full list of the Java group
and, as you can see the Jave Runtime Environment is Dissabled. I am guessing that
is probably the problem. I wonder why it would be dissabled upon installation?
I am running spybot at the suggestion of one of the BleepingComputer expert techs during the Virus removal.
It often askes me if it is ok to change a registry setting. Sometimes it is not
possible to know what the setting is and if I am not expecting to have a setting changed,
I may say no if I don't know what it is. This could have happened the 1st time I openned IE
after the fresh installation of Java.
I will await your response before I enable the Java Runtime Environment.

Yes, try enabling it
Then close the browser
Then open the browser and see if Java is working.
If not, we can consider a reset in the Internet Options before considering a reinstall of IE.

Comparing my admin account with my usual user account, I find that everything in the admin account
is enabled. However, in my usual user account
Diagnose Connection Problems...
Windows Messenger
and
Rip YouTube file embedded in this page
are all dissabled. I don't think I would ever want to use Windows Messenger unless some other
process requires it. Diagnose Connection Problems could be useful. The YouTube ripper might be useful
but I have never had occasion to use it.
these same addons are enabled in the admin account.

I guess we are done with the Java Issue.
I have noticed for several years that the system is frequenly complaining about things
in the sytem event log. Is that something that you can help me clean up of should I start
another topic?
thank you very much for all your assistance. At this depth, I am under water.

That's one I'll remember for next time and hopefully this thread will help others with the same problem searching the net for answers
You should start a new thread for the other issue.
