Chrome installation problems Can't updaate or install chrome from scratch

I recently tried updating Google Chrome to the latest version and received a message that the updater was unavailable (error 3). I looked up what to do and one option was to uninstall the existing version and reinstall.
I used RevoUninstall to clear it out, downloaded the latest version and ran the setup routine from Google. It crashed.
I have since repeated the download and install procedure several times and each time it has crashed.
My OS is WIN 7 ultimate.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix the problem so that I can get chrome to install on my computer?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
