BleepingComputer.com: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 Error when trying to install Windows 7

My friend gave me this computer:

He had a nasty virus on it so he wiped the Harddrive. It originally had 64 bit Vista but I had a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit key laying around so I Downloaded the W7 iso and tried both burning it to a cd and using a usb but both had this error popup.

The error said:
"The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 and make sure that the disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed."

What "W7 iso" might that be? I'm not aware of MS authorizing downloads of any version of Windows, past or present, for free.

Also, don't bother downloading this ISO if you don't have a valid student-only product key. You'll probably be able to install it, but your key won't activate the OS.

Your product key MUST MATCH the version you install. A Pro key will not activate a Home Premium install."
Now...I'm not the most intelligent person in the world...but it seems to me that anyone suggesting that a user without a valid student license...who uses the mentioned website to download Win 7...is in violation of the Win 7 EULA.

I have no clue why those links are plastered all over the Web, with language that is misleading...I don't work for Microsoft and that should be their concern. But I do know how to read and properly interpret the intent for such links to be available only to valid users with student licenses.

The policy of this website...continues to be that such downloads by those who obviously don't qualify as users with valid student licenses...are in violation of the Win 7 EULA.

Forum rule quote: "No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences."

I see nothing to equivocate, discuss, debate, etc...about the intent of said links...whom they are intended for...and whom they are not intended for.

I have no personal interest in Microsoft...but I have a personal interest in seeing that current rules/procedures established for this website...are executed and adhered to by members in good standing.

Are Digital River's download links illegal for use by people not taking part in the promotion?

I've noticed the spread on some tech sites of direct-download links for Windows 7, for large ISO files hosted by Digital River. It turns out those links seem to only be for the use of students who bought under a certain promotion through the Microsoft store prior to Jan. 3, 2010.

So my question is, if someone comes along today, not as part of that promotion, and uses those links, is it legal? Or is it violation of Microsoft's copyright? It seems to me that downloading gigs thousands/millions of times from a server will involve some costs that Microsoft and Digital River did not intend.

I know that the downloaded copies of Windows would need to be activated. That's not the question. Thanks for any input.

ETA: The links are not provided with Microsoft's permission, nor are the downloads in agreement with Microsoft's terms of use. In fact on the Digital River website qualified users (i.e. students who bought from the Microsoft site during a specified eligibility period) are directed to contact customer support directly to obtain download links; the fact that one or more of them must have passed the links along does not change the fact that the unqualified use of the links is not permitted.
