Remember though, the edimax works fine on the other laptop. So I reckon it must be something peculiar with the non working laptop.
When I logged onto the edimax via the web browser, it saved and rebooted on the non working laptop, the same as it did with the working laptop.
I'm at a loss at the minute.

Below is what I did in order to get a successful connection. the only problem is, I have to do the operation below every time I start up my laptop.
My wife also uses the laptop and she would just like to get online without having to do anything or anything much (understandable).
So I'm wondering now what I can do so that I get online right away without doing below every time I switch on the laptop.
I just want to be able to click on "view available network connections" and click on the "Edimax" network. but in order to see the available network connections, I have to carry out the exercise below every time.
start:
run:
services.msc
wireless zero configuration (bottom)
click on "start" then "apply"
then go to
"network connections"
right click on
"wireless network connection" icon
select
properties
select
"wireless networks"
tick
"use windows to configure my wireless network settings
then click "ok"

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
- List content of Hosts
- List IP configuration
- List last 10 Event Viewer log
- List Installed Programs
- List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
- List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Error: (02/01/2012 04:51:02 PM) (Source: Application Error) (User: )
Description: Fault bucket 300831159.
The Wep key exchange did not result in a secure connection setup after 802.1x authentication. The current setting has been marked as failed and the Wireless connection will be disconnected.
There is the root of this issue. You need to manually setup the connection and re-enter your key. The key should be available via the Edimax Extender.
My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

I just want to be clear about what i'm doing.

The edimax is on an "unsecured wireless network" so it doesn't ask me for a key. when I go through the steps via zero config then "use windows to configure my wireless network.." it connects once I press "connect". No box comes up asking for the network key.

her's what I did
Initial problem was not being able to connect to my edimax range extender with a particular laptop.
The main problem was that when I clicked on "view available wireless networks", it came up with a blank screen saying:
"windows cannot configure this wireless connection".
So I found (by chance) an online video which showed me how to do the following.
click on "start" (bottom left of screen"
then click "run"
then you enter "services.msc" into the box and click "ok"
when a box opens, (called "services local") double click on "wireless zero configuration"
under the "general" tab, click "start" then click "ok"
Now go back to "start" (bottom left of your screen) and point to "connect to" and select "show all connections"
right click "wireless network connection" and select "allow windows to connect to wireless connection"
Once you click ok to this, you are then able to view wireless connections via the tray and connect accordingly.
PHASE 2
The problem remained that whenever I switched on my laptop, I kept having to do the laborious task above so this is what I did next.
I clicked on "start" (bottom left of screen)"
I then clicked on "control panel" and selected "classical view" (top right of box)
I then double clicked on "wireless configuration" and clicked the downward arrow on the "ad" option
and then I selected "use Wizard".
The wizard then found my edimax extender and I selected it and clicked "next" where I entered its ssid name and password key.
the ssid name is just the name you assigned previously to the edimax router or maybe you kept it as "edimax ap". the password key is the password that you already made up to set up your secured network. (minimum of 8 letters/numbers.
Once i selected connect, to connect to the edimax, I was able to re-start my laptop which, when I re-started, automatically connected to my edimax without my having to do anything.
So great success and I give 100 credit to all the guys that helped me on this forum. esp cryptodan
Now I've learnt something new.
