BleepingComputer.com: Windows 7 Upgrade - BSOD

Hello.

I recently upgraded a Dell Inspiron 1440 with Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate and now get Blue Screen of Death over and over again. I've tried to do Windows Update but either get BSOD or freezes. Here is the most recent minidump report. Can anyone make sense of this and provide a clue as to what could be a next step?

1) EXACTLY how did you perform the update?

2) After updating, did you install the correct W7 drivers where available? Look in Device Manager - any yellow or red symbols?

3) Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Here are answers:
1) I attempted to perform Windows Update several times by either(a) selecting the Windows Update item in the All Programs menu, or ( opening Control Panel, going to System and Security Options, and doing Windows Update. I assume these are just two paths to getting to the same function. I did have success when I selected one or a few updates, but crashed other times when I selected one or a few or all updates. Some of the updates appeared to be packages of Win7 updates and I am not sure of the exact contents, that is, if there were drivers in that package, I am not sure what drivers may have been included. Last time I attempted to run Win Update, it simply froze.

2) Currently, there are no yellow or red symbols/alerts in Device Manager. All appears okay in Device Manager. This is the first time I've looked at Dev. Manager after this Win7 upgrade, so I'm not sure if there were errors recently.

- Sorry - guess my question wasn't clear. I meant exactly how did you upgrade to W7?

The upgrade was with a Microsoft DVD for Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Upgrade (and so required an existing OS). Existing OS was Vista Home Premium. Upgrade process was simply the insertion of DVD, running install routine and selecting the "Upgrade" option as opposed to the clean install that would have wiped clean data and programs. So, the "Upgrade" option preserved installed programs and data files, documents, etc (and apparently buggy software or out of date drivers or something causing BSOD).

Okay, thanks. After doing that did you try to obtain and install the Windows 7 drivers for all of your hardware?

After a few BSODs, and the computer stabilized a bit, I went to Dell Support Site, entered computer Service Tag number and a scan of the computer produced a list of driver updates. I attempted downloads in order they were listed, but midway, computer would BSOD. Right now, I'm attempted to re-do these downloads and installs of the drivers from the Dell site. So far, so good. I'm halfway through the list. I skipped the BIOS update since I did it once already (it appeared successful the first time around) and my layman's sensibilities are a little too timid to be messing with the BIOS. Again, though, I'm working my way through the Dell driver updates. Will repost when done with the results.

I did the following and the computer appears to be stable now. No BSOD anymore so far:

1) Installed updates recommended by Dell Support Web site. This updates seemed NOT to fix the problem, but installs were all successful.

2) Ran Windows Update. Installed 43 Important Updates. After reboot, crashed - BSOD. Then,computer froze when tried to do Update. Got message that a Realtek driver was problematic.

3) Went to Device Manager and right-clicked on every device listed and ran an update via this interface. Most were already up to date.

After a few reboots, system appears stable. It simply took a couple days worth of reboots, attempted driver updates, other crashes, etc., to get the computer to finally be stable enough to exhaustively install every possible needed update through the three avenues listed above.
