BleepingComputer.com: External Drive Letter Assignment

We have a server that is running Windows SBS 2011. We are currently using a program to do all of our backups on external hard drives. The program is setup to automatically save to drive G and runs overnight. This works well for most days. We are slowly switching from 500GB drives to 1TB drives. The 1TB drives do not register as drive G, instead they register as drive J. So on the days where we are using a 1TB drive, the backup program does not work unless someone goes in and changes the backup drive location manually. I have considered creating an additional job, but that would mean that everyday at least one of the jobs would fail.

Do you have any suggestions for how to make the drives the same when they are plugged in.

Reason for edit: Moved from External Hardware to Windows NT.

If you're moving to 1TB drives, simply unplug the 500gb drive, wait for it to disappear out of "Computer", then plug in the 1TB drive.

After that, right click "Computer", then click manage. On the left pane, go to Storage->Disk management. Right click on your J: drive, and choose "Change drive letter and paths". From there you will be able to change your drive letter for that specific drive, but make sure that you're not picking a letter that already exists.

If you plan on having both drives plugged in at the same time, you cannot have them on the same letter unless they're connected to a raid controller, and are turned into 1 logical drive before windows sees them, but that's not what you want to do.

I will give this a try. Thanks for the suggestion! We only have one drive connected at a time. I knew that had to be a simple sollution.
