VLC Player Questions

I've been using this portable version of VLC player for a few years-> VLC portable and now when I play MKV files I only get a grey screen with the audio.

Question 1:
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Question 2:
Do any of you know of any portable media players similar to the VLC one I've been using; similar in size and functionality?

Have you tried downloading a fresh version? the original just may have become corrupted.

Why all the fuss, I already have Windows 8. Three windows at the front, and five at the back since I bought the house.

VLC is a very heavy software, and I think KM Player is the better option, It almost run all kind of audio and video files.

You can install a codec pack which includes it and then VLC should be able to play it.

Installing this codec pack help me with a similar mkv. file issue.
