how are you accessing computer, kapersky repair disk ?
you may have an easier time with a linux "live cd"

an answer to L.L.'s question may also be helpful "What is the manufacturer and model of the laptop?"
and do you have the product key on a sticker, as James pointed out ?

I have been accessing and backing up my files by accessing the notepad from the command prompt and then doing 'open' to be able to access the file explorer to copy files over to a usb.

The laptop is about 4 years old and had xp preinstalled, so the product key is on the label on the underside is for Windows xp.

The laptop is a medion 97900 wim 2100 notebook pc.

I tried to do a repair install from by opening the setup from the file explorer thing mentioned above, and when I click repair, as opposed to custom, it says I need to remove the cd, boot and try the installation again. I also tried booting from the cd and got the same error. Im guessing I need to be in Windows 7 proper, and not the recovery environment, to do a repair install?

I have backed up everything I need to, so if I need to do a clean reinstall I will just have to transfer my files back across, but if there is a way to do a repair install without being in Windows 7 I would be grateful!

Thanks for the help so far.

Per http://www1.medion.de/downloads/?op=search&lang=uk&type=TEXT&Param= , the only drivers listed for that system are for XP and Vista.

I believe that's the base of your "problems".

I don't believe anyone here can overcome a system that probably doesn't qualify for Win 7 installs.

I don't understand, I've been using Windows 7 for over 2 years on the laptop without any major problems.

DELETED

EDIT: Found more about this situation. Probably best for me to bow out of this one.

So reload windows ,you must have had the windows key to install it back then ,i was going to say it would be on the sleeve the dvd cam in but remembered you used a iso file to load it back then ,not sure why you didn't have the full disk with the case and key , as Microsoft doesn't sell .iso of there operating systems .

Edit:
my opinion ,your only fix right now it to go out and buy a new copy with key and reinstall windows.

So i bought a new copy of Windows 7 and did a reinstall. It worked OK for about a week, and then when it was sat idle it just retarted. It was unable to start normally, but it was also unable to enter system repair. It just reaches a black screen with the cursor in the middle. I tried booting in safe mode and last know good configuration, and reach the same black screen. I have tried to boot from the windows cd and reinstall, but after loading the files and showing the animated windows logo, it goes to the black screen with the cursor on it. I'm gessing it's some sort of harware problem, is there any rescue disk i can use to see what the problem is? I was able to boot into the kaspersky rescue disk.

When you buy Windows 7 from their online store, you can accept the purchase as a download.
If it looks like I know what I'm doing, there's a pretty good chance the only reason for that is because
I once asked someone to run chkdsk /r and a BC Advisor smacked me in the back of the head.

yes it is sounding like a hardware problem. since you can boot and run this kaspersky disk i am suspecting it is the hardrive. I checked the medion site to find the specs for your machine but i cannot find the hard drive info. Maybe you have some documentation that will tell you what hard drive you have.

Hard drive manufacturer will have diagnostic software at their site. Get the bootable one so you can boot from it and test your hard drive.
