Ok so I have a Dell inspiron 6000 running windows XPsp3. Recently it has stopped reading my thumb drives. It now shows them a Removable disk(E;)and when I try to open them it prompts me with the following message."The Disk in disk drive E is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" there was nothing of importance on the drive so I did format it. Still got that message. So I assumed that the drive had bought the dust. Bought a brand new one and the result was the same. Now interestingly it WILL read my mp3 player just not usb storage devices.help me.

You might try uninstalling your USB controllers (only controllers) via Device Manager...then rebooting. The controllers may be damaged and will reinstall upon reboot.

Tried that. Still the same problem sadly. Thanks for trying though.
