BleepingComputer.com: dotnetfx35setup freezes computer.

FIrst off, hi. First post and this is to try and fix a problem that I created myself and can't seem to find a way to fix it despite several hours looking around the net.

I actually have two problems so here goes;

1. As I just re-installed my 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3' I had to download programs that I wanted again. One of these was Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, from which I gather was to help me run some other programs I wanted to download. Now, as I was installing (It might have been downloading but I'm fairly sure it was past that point) it, my computer restarted of it's own will which could have been due to a many number of things (My comp is not the best and I had left it on overnight downloading a game). So, halfway through the installation, my comp restarts. I go back to try and install dotnetfx35setup and it seems to be going well until it freezes my computer at a certain point. I restart and try again yet it freezes at exactly the same point. Btw, I did go to system restore but found out it was turned off on all drives

So, what can I do? I've found this and wonder if it's worth a shot?

2. Because of the above problem, I decided to go into Add Or Remove Programs to see if it had partially installed so I can remove via that. I found what looked like something to do with it which was 'Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0' so I un-installed it despite messages saying some programs/games would become faulty. It does seem to have made my game I play crash a lot more. I have been looking for downloads for this for ages yet I cannot find any. I think I found somewhere that it's part of Windows Media Player and wonder if I just un-installed that of my comp and downloaded a fresh version, the Framework Feature Pack be re-installed along with it?

Well...it's not "worth a shot" of any type by me, but it's your system.

Where did you download your version of 3.5 from?

Generally...if a program requires a specific version of MS.NET...that program will facilitate the download of such in the program install package OR specifically tell the user what version to install. Generally, I've not seen any program call for 3.5: usually, the programs that I run which want it installed want 2.0, so I install 2.0 and then install 3.5, SP1 because that's the version that generally clicks well with XP.

I would uninstall all versions currently installed, fully or partially, using the Dotnetfix Cleanup Tools - http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip .

I would then install 2.0 (since my ATI video card requires it), reboot...then reinstall 3.5, SP1. I would only install another specific version if a program asks for it.

You should also be aware that various MS products which require a given version of NET Framework (e.g., Visual Basic) will include the install of that version in their installer package.

Okay, first off, thank you for your quick reply and sorry for my late one.

The Dotnetfix Cleanup Tool worked like a charm thank you very much No problems on that end!


However, in regards to the Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0, it has still not been re-installed. I have downloaded http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=11800 and thought that the Feature Pack 1.0 would be included in that. Nothing on my Add Or Remove Programs has shown up named it, though do you think it's possible it is just included under a different name?

I'm not a hardwzre (or anything else) sort of person...but I've always thought that user-mode drivers were not a good thing for a system to be using and are unnecessary.

Looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_User_Mode_Driver_Framework, it seems that such are for developers who are striving to create device drivers...not for regular use in a system with drivers already written/provided.

I could be wrong but it seems to me that a standard computer user has no need at all for the user-mode driver package.
