Hi Peeps,
Difficult this one; I was drawn into Linux by an IT Technician at a School - the distro - Knoppix 2.9 (I still have it somewhere), and true it was awesome at recovering data from BSOD Windows machines; however, when it came to a USB recovery situation (FAT32 format that is) Knoppix didn't take the biscuit - Freespire 1.0.13 did! For people migrating from Windows, Freespire was a very good look alike although there were some security issues if you didn't know what you were doing at point of install. I find it hard to choose just one distro as the best live one but it would have to go to Sabayon for sheer coolness (3.3 upwards) - a Gentoo based distro, with Ultimate Edition 2.1 (Ubuntu garnered by ONE man - Thee Mahn) a close second. Sabayon just works 'out of the box' and is (I think) the ONLY distro to have a 'live help' link (irc) with other experienced users for assistance - even in live mode, has an interesting collection of games (earlier live versions even had a fair number of on-line games that worked whilst running live. Sadly Sabayon (for me) does not do too well in the Wireless stakes, having said that not many do to be fair, as far as Netgear WG111T clients are concerned! My favourite version would have to be from the 3.3 era of Sabayon as it introduced me to Tryad - the first internet band - members had never met when they formed - 3.3 had 'Sampling Memory' from their first 'album' which you can download from Creative Commons Licence Music site of www.jamendo.com - open your ears (not just your source!).
Best regards,
