This laptop contains a Matbleepa DVD-RAM UJ890AS which will not read any format of disc.

The problem started completely out of the blue as the drive was working perfectly fine a couple of days prior to the problem starting. Whether a windows update or iTunes update etc

The drive is showing in Disk Management and shows as working properly in Device Manager.

Event viewer shows the following error The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.

I have so far;

  • Checked for available driver updates - none noted
  • Uninstalled the driver, rebooted the machine and let Windows re-install automatically - still no resolution to the problem.
  • Tweaking the registry to remove the upper filters associated with iTunes - since resorted back to standard as this did not resolve the issue.
  • Also removed iTunes and reinstalled

Machine is running Windows 7 Home Premium (SP1) 64 Bit.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

when you deleted the upper filter in registry did you reboot the computer ,for the event viewer error you could try getting motherboard chipset drive from sony com and reinstall it

the fact it shows up and says it working that is only because its plugged in ,not because the laser is working ,it could be that it just died ,they do ,do that sometimes

OR...this....from Microsoft.
Be SERIOUSLY careful when tweaking registry......be sure you are backed up first !

1. Click Start

Start button, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

The system will automatically rebuild the registry records when you restart your computer.

Driver? CD/DVD drives don't require a driver. Windows offers built-in support for these devices.

What you can update is the drive's Firmware, which can be obtained from the drive manufacturer's website.

@ipk1uk

Please try the MS FixIt program from here:

Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media

See if the computer can boot from bootable CD/DVD (e.g. OS install discs, Linux Live discs). This will determine if the drive can read discs at all. If it cannot, the lens may be obscured (clean the lens), the i/o interface has a fault (a bit difficult to get to check in a laptop) or the laser failed, as already suggested. If the laser has failed, all the other faultfinding is a waste of time.

Pleased to have been a Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) 2007/8, 2008/9

I pressed F5, and I'm feeling refreshed...
