Hi,

I'm not sure whether I should post this in the "Am I infected?" forum or here, but I figured it might not be malware so I should post here.

For the past week or so, my laptop has been very slow and I have had to force shut down a couple of times. I ran avast and Superantispyware last night and found 347 adware/tracking cookies :ph34r: I thought maybe it'd be okay after my laptop was rid of all that, but today I randomly got the Blue Screen of Death ):

Here was the message that I was able to save in Safe Mode:

Quote

Problem signature:

What can I do?

Thank you!

Please download, unzip, and run BlueScreenView.

When scanning is done, go to Edit > Select All.

Then go to File > Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

If it looks like I know what I'm doing, there's a pretty good chance the only reason for that is because
I once asked someone to run chkdsk /r and a BC Advisor smacked me in the back of the head.

Three things to bring up:

Was there anything that changed a week ago, such as installing or updating a program, driver, or the OS itself? Did you visit any websites you don't normally go to?

Use Resource Monitor (search for it in the Start Orb) to check for any processes using inordinate amounts of RAM.

Update your GPU drivers.

If you can't think of anything that's specifically changed, sudden slowdowns on a laptop are often because of malware. Your bluescreen, according to MS, if often caused by excessive paged pool (the memory set aside for the kernel) usage and your GPU drivers get into memory territory they're not supposed to.

Sorry, I'm not too tech-savvy so maybe more laymen's terms please? :x

I don't believe that I've done anything in the past week that was abnormal. If I installed an update, it was through Windows Updates and it does it automatically so I don't know what was installed that might've caused it.

One thing I could note was that Firefox wouldn't open no matter what (I use Chrome as a default, but use Firefox occasionally). It would only display the "would you like to send this crash report" dialog. So I ran avast with boot-time scan and it detected a file called Firefox Setup.exe that is a decompression bomb. After that I uninstalled Firefox and ran Disk Cleanup since the file was in Temporary Internet Files and then reinstalled Firefox.

My apologies. I'm still getting used to posting the way the regulars here on BC do (they are very methodical and thorough with their instructions). Let me start again.

Use Speccy to provide details of your computer's configuration.

  • Download, install, and run
  • After Speccy has finished gathering information, click File > Publish Snapshot
  • In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  • A web address will be displayed, click Copy to Clipboard and paste it in your next post.

=========================================

Use Process Explorer to provide an overview of your running processes.

  • Download the .zip file and extract to a folder on your desktop. Open that folder, right-click procexp and select Run As Administrator.
  • In Process Explorer, Click File > Save As.... Save to your desktop as procexp.txt.
  • Attach (do not copy & paste) procexp.txt to your next post. Use the forum's "Full Editor" to attach files.

Nothing in those logs jumps out at me.

Update your graphics drivers

Download latest driver from here and install.

Restart after installation.

===========================================

Reset Avast

  • Click the Start Orb, type in "uninstall", and click Uninstall a program in the search results.
  • Find and double-click on Avast.
  • In the pop-up window, scroll down and select Repair. Click Next and wait until Avast finishes.

============================================

Reseat your RAM

  • Important! Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery.
  • Follow these instructions.
  • The exact placement of your plastic panel will likely be different, but the process is the same.
