BleepingComputer.com: Very nasty virus, stops everything I try to do to get rid of it

Well someone was showing me a website, and I went to it, it was called "librapisces.com" dont ever go there.
It loaded something on my computer I cant get rid of. It happened on Win 7 ultimate 64bit, though when
I boot into XP Pro on the same hard drive it is active there too.

Well it will close out any program I have running even in safemode, sometimes quickly sometimes after a while. This thing wont
let me run anything. I tried RKill, but it then returns a million error messages about not being able to access
the rogue processes to stop them. I tried rootkit detectors from this website, found over 15 hidden processes
but after 5 minutes the virus closed it and started making a windows error pop up infinitely, I had to just shut my laptop
down and now I'm on my desktop. I need to kill the process before I can even attempt to remove it, but this virus is so stubborn
it wont let me do anything. I'm guessing the best thing I can do is boot from a linux liveCD as trying to fix this from within
windows has failed. I tried repairing my computer option, and it hangs on the "Loading windows files" part.

Finally got rkill to work it reported

I think this pev.3xe is the virus
Also other processes running called sed.3xe2 or something.
I'm also installed spybot search and destroy,
Also now everytime I enter a website it tries to redirect me to some webstie
called motherauto, I bypass it so I dont know the fullname.
Though when I try to run Spybot I get a command window saying "The service is invalid"
but the program loaded, I got command prompt error messages on other programs I tried
to run to stop the virus, so I'm thinking the virus is trying to alter or halt anything
I try to run to delete it, it's very annoying and clever.

So the virus shutdown firefox so I run rkill again and get this

Update!
Using the disk manager I found an "unalloaced" partition for 2MB that i cannot delete because of I/O device error. So it looks like the virus has modified the partition table and installed itself on a hidden partition. I will attempt to remove it.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
    
  • DDS.pif
  
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  
• Notepad will open with the results.
  
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

1. Well after running a lot of programs and diagnostic tools the problem seemed to have gone away, I let my laptop run over night, I wake up to find FF closed, and the virus uploaded "Win 7 Antispyware" to my computer. So I rebooted into safe mode initiated RKill and found the fake antispyware in my apps data/local folder, usually were a lot of those bogus programs reside when then upload. But there was still suspicious activity going on when I restarted. When I tried to open ANY executable windows said it didn't know how to open the program and to select a program to open it with, like when I tried to load FF or IE or RKill, it didn't know how to handle the request. When I tried to open taskmanager, windows reported the system exe did not exist (not sure it the virus deleted it or blocked the exe request). After that I had thought maybe the virus was now altering system files so I shut the laptop down, took out the HDD and labeled it, then I put in another HDD (clean one) and I haven't gone back to the HDD until I have a better plan to fix it.

2. I think it's beyond the point where I can boot into the OS and try to run programs as the virus is controlling part of the OS now and may be integrated into it. I need to buy some blank CDs and burn a liveCD to boot into linux and try from there, cant find my USB sticks, all I have is a ATAPI IDE/SATA to USB bridge and a stack of laptop HDDs, and preparing one to boot Trinity Rescue Kit has been difficult.

3. I have a bootable Windows 7-U 64bit setup on external USB HDD and original ISO on my desktop computer.

Install the infected HDD back into your laptop, then follow the next set of instructions.


You will need your external USB hard drive, a blank CD, and a clean computer to perform steps 1-5.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer

• Run GETxPUD.exe
  
• A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  
• Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  
• The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finishing will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  
• Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  
• Remove the CD and insert it in the sick computer, along with the external USB hard drive
  
• Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  
• The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  
• Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  
• Follow the prompts
  
• A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  
• Press File
  
• Expand mnt
  
• sda1,2...usually corresponds to your internal HDD
  
• sdb1 is likely your USB HD
  
• Click on the folder that represents your USB hard drive (sdb1 ?)
  
• Press Tool at the top
  
• Choose Open Terminal
  
• Type the following and press enter:
  
  dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1
  
  
• Press Enter
  
• After it has finished a file will be located on your USB hard drive named mbr.bin
  
• Remove the USB hard drive and connect it back to your working computer and navigate to mbr.bin, zip it up and attach it to your next reply.

This will allow me to have a look at the MasterBootRecord of your drive and see if it is infected.:

Try this please:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  
  
  • DDS.scr
    
  • DDS.pif
  
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  
• Notepad will open with the results.
  
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

You said that you were able to correct the registry entry that was preventing .exe's from running. Just to make sure, please follow this procedure:

We need to disable Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer"
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.

• Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  
• If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  
• Click Mode > Advanced Mode.
  
  
• You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, click Yes
  
• Click on Tools and then Resident
  
  
• Uncheck this checkbox: "Resident TeaTimer {protection of over-all system settings) active"
  
• Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

• Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.
  
  
  
• It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.
  
  
  
• This infection changes settings on your computer so that when you launch an executable, a file ending with .exe, it will instead launch the infection rather than the desired program. To fix this we must first download a Registry file that will fix these changes. From a clean computer, please download the following file and save it to a removable media such as a CD/DVD, external Drive, or USB flash drive.
  
  FixNCR.reg
  
  Once that file is downloaded and saved on a removable devices, insert the removable device into the infected computer and open the folder the drive letter associated with it. You should now see the FixNCR.reg file that you had downloaded onto it. Double-click on the FixNCR.reg file to fix the Registry on your infected computer. You should now be able to run your normal executable programs and can proceed to the next step.
  
  
• Now we must first end the processes that belong to Win 7 Antispyware 2012 & Vista Antivirus 2012 and clean up some Registry settings so they do not interfere with the cleaning procedure. To do this, please download RKill to your desktop from the following link.
  
  RKill Download Link - (Download page will open in a new tab or browser window.)
  
  When at the download page, click on the Download Now button labeled iExplore.exe download link . When you are prompted where to save it, please save it on your desktop.
  
  
  
• Once it is downloaded, double-click on the iExplore.exe icon in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Win 7 Antispyware 2012 & Vista Antivirus 2012 and other Rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that RKill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by Win 7 Antispyware 2012 & Vista Antivirus 2012 when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close RKill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run RKill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate Win 7 Antispyware 2012 & Vista Antivirus 2012 . So, please try running RKill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the guide. If you continue having problems running RKill, you can download the other renamed versions of RKill from the rkill download page. All of the files are renamed copies of RKill, which you can try instead. Please note that the download page will open in a new browser window or tab.
  
  Do not reboot your computer after running RKill as the malware programs will start again.

Now, proceed with the following two scans:

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

• Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
  Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  
• If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  
• To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  
• Click the Start Scan button.
  
• Do not use the computer during the scan
  
• If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  
• If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  
• Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  
• A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  
• Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.

Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application.
  For instructions with screenshots, please refer to this Guide.
  
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  
• Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  
• If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  
• If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

• Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  
• Click on the Scan button.
  
• When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  
• Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  
• Exit Malwarebytes when done.

Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.
