BleepingComputer.com: vds startup failure "Error2: The system cannot find the file specified."

I have a fairly fresh win7 pro sp1 64 bit install which replaced a robust XP pro environment.

Now I cant start Virtual Disk service because "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

Browsing thru the event viewer I also notice Windows Time service fails with a similar error, so does Protected Storage service, and CNG Key Isolation service.

The Volume Shadow copy service, Software Protection service, Print Spooler service, Distributed Transaction Coordinator service, Encrypting File System service and the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service all fail to start with "The system cannot find the path specified."

I've run AVG and Malwarebytes they're all clean. Also used the MS system check, scandisk, and other tips from technet all to no avail.

I ran HJT tonight (snippet below) and noticed a bunch of "File missing", Unknown owner, and (no file) entries. I verified these files exist - and tested changing the ownership on 1 file from TrustedInstaller to Administrator to no avail. I am at a loss. This was a clean install on a working system. Now i cant run backups, volume management, restore points, or anything else with a dependency on Virtual Disk service. I compared my registry to a working system and noticed a few extra entries in the CURRENT USER related to VDS, but nothing else. Everything else seems to be working...

Does anyone know what HJT is trying to tell me or how to fix the unknown owner, file missing and no file errors?

I also noticed scant little useful support from Microsoft on this error. The thought of re-installing everything is cringeworthy.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
    
  • DDS.pif
  
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  
• Notepad will open with the results.
  
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

How many hard disks do you have connected to this computer and on which one is windows installed? I see some controller errors so a disk check is in order.

4 physical drives. windows is on c.

Press Windows key + R, type chkdsk /r and press enter.
Type Y and press enter when asked to schedule the disk check for the next reboot.
Restart your computer and let the disk check run unhindered. Note, this may take a long time.

When finished let me know if anything has changed.

i have done this a dozen times - no errors - no joy.

still unable to start virtual disk service.

Have you tried the system file checker as well?

If not, click Start > All programs > Accessories, right click Command Prompt and select "run as administrator".

Type sfc /scannow and press enter.

Let the system file checker run unhindered.

yup - tried that too.
