Did you switch to another operating system prior to the problem? Please post the computer model.

Is Vista the original OS for the Presario model? From what site is the driver downloaded and how did you install after? Compaq presario cq50 _ _ series?

Can you check your device manager for the sound controller for any marks or flags after installing? Make sure it is not disabled. Right-click the sound adapter after expanding and choose enable.

What do you mean nothing about sound controller? Its usually under Sound, Video and Game controllers.

FWIW: The audio/sound controller...may not be listed...until the audio drivers are installed.

Are there any unknown devices reflected in the Device Manager listing?

Then it must be an onboard sound chip defect. At this point as a last resort is to try reinstalling Vista OS then reinstall chipset driver first to be followed by audio, network. If you are going to proceed with this, please make backups of your documents.
