My neighbors had gotten the Windows 2012 virus on their Windows 7 pc. I was able to boot into safe mode and then install, update, & run malwarebytes. I let malwarebytes remove the infected files, rebooted and rescanned the pc. At that point malwarebytes came back clean but when I attempted to click on a program I got prompted to choose which program I wanted to use to open the program I clicked on. After searching the internet I came across this link: http://www.howtogeek.com/57837/how-to-remove-win-7-anti-spyware-2011-fake-anti-malware-infections/ which at the bottom of that article contains a link to a ‘clean’ window 7 registry file. I followed the instructions in that article to repair which did not work, so as a last resort I merged the copy of that registry file with the one on my neighbor’s pc. Everything seemed to work fine, except I could not get their mcafee firewall to stay on. So I uninstalled it & re-installed it, but it had me remove malwarebytes due to compatibility issues. Once mcafee was re-installed everything seems fine, except now my neighbors claim that their pc is 'slow'. I've ran ccleaner and cleaned up a questionable file called 'qay.exe' in \appdata\local\, deleted cookies, ran a defrag and ran mcafee virus scan in safe mode which came back finding 2 items (jv/mailsend ). I’ve also ran super antispyware in safe mode and it only found tracking cookies, which I removed. My concern is that the steps I mentioned above have not completely removed the virus and that is causing the slowness or possibly they are paranoid b/c of the virus. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks.
