I have a new PC running Windows 7 Pro 64 SP1. By default, it installs IE 9. I need IE 8. I have disabled IE 9 in Control Panel, programs and features, turn Windows features on and off. I have downloaded IE 8 from Microsoft (64-bit). I get the message "Internet Explorer is not supported on this platform." Any suggestions for resolution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First, turn IE back on in "Turn Windows features on and off". You can't run more than one version of IE at a time. When IE9 installs, IE8 goes away. When you disable IE in "Turn Windows features on and off", IE goes away entirely.
You can follow the directions here to uninstall IE9 (and get IE8 back):
