Machine is Gateway nx570x running XP media center edition. I had never encountered this version of XP before. Tried to run combofix and it goes through the first steps, thru setting restore points and starting checks. It just sets there from that point on, let set running for 24 hours and never reached step 1 complete. Is this because of the Media center edition of XP? Or do I have something serious to contend with. XP is current on all updates, firewall is turned off, MS security Essentials is turned off.

Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

I am having the same problem. Combofix gets to the scanning computer mode and just sits there with a blinking cursor... I have also turned off all of my "protection software". My system picked up a Trojan (DOS/Alureon.E) last week that I am trying to remove.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.

Combofix runs on XP MCE, and a long scan time should not be caused by that OS version. There are many things that can interfere with Combofix, not the least of which are active malware infections.

If you suspect your system is infected, I recommend to follow the Preparation Guide and post your logs in a new topic in this forum.
Combofix is a very powerful tool and can cause extensive damage. I do not recommend to run it unsupervised.

@ astroracer, combofix is not equipped to deal with that infection, I strongly recommend you to follow the steps in the Preparation Guide (see link above).
