is windows security essential enough of a protection?

is windows security essential enough of a protection? Do I need too download an antivirus such as avast

Thank you again for your site an invaluable help every time. My question is this do I need too install more then Window's security essentials or is it not safe enough?

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good anti virus app. You might want to supplement it with the free versions of MalwareBytes (use it to do periodic scans manually) and SpywareBlaster (remember to update the definitions every week or so). And there is NOTHING more important than "smart computing" (don't open email links unless you are absolutely certain you know what they are, don't go to questionable websites or download potentially harmful items from the web, etc).

I nearly fell off my chair, so fast was your answer. Thank you very much Allan. I do like MS as it doesn't hamper performances and its so much simpler, but when I need serious advise I come here. Thank you again (and I do apply smart computing ;))

using third party firewall will provide a very good boost to your security

maybe you are an expert in Malware Removal that's you always sure about your Computer Clean Form Malware Rootkits etc

but to be honest even that microsoft Firewall is not that Bad
but there is alot of other Product that provide More protection

OA provide Hips + anti Logger Function
Comodo Provide Hips

i don't know about other Firewalls But those are the best now days

Back in XP times I used zone alarm, which I find pretty good and no-script on firefox, but both have to be managed. I try to keep things as management free as possible when its not for me. The thing is do we need them or MSE will suffice, I have gone by Allan's advice.

From recent experience, I would keep Avast! or another free antivirus handy as the definition updates for MSE are directly linked to Windows Update in Vista. I don't know about Win7, but just in case you can't get WU to work for some reason (like me, right now), it's a good idea to have a program that isn't dependent entirely on the Microsoft Corporation to protect your computer. <_<

Thank you for all your posts. I did so much want to not have to deal with adding anti viruses and firewalls. The thing is its for a school and we have extreemly limited budget and except for clamWin ( a real resource drain) I did not find anything that was truely free for us. Any ideas? Thank you in advance

While I don't care for AVG, they did offer discounts for non-profits and educational institutions in the past. They still may be doing that as there is a dedicated page with a number you can call. AVG for Education

My choices for good protection are: AVAST! antivirus free and Emsisoft Malware Scanner. Also SECUNIA PSI free is good tool. Microsoft Security Essentsial and AVAST! = No good. Net conflicts will come because two antivirus can't work together on same computer.
