I'm not at all experienced enough in computers to solve things like this by myself so please bare with me... Over the past few days my computer has had a rude awakening from sleep mode, making a loud revving noise and bluescreening. I've got a few minidump files but I have no idea what to do with them or how to extract any useful info from them. I can't say i've done anything major as far as new programs or setting changes recently so this is quite random. Please tell me what I need to attach or post to help get this resolved...
Thank you SO much in advance for your time and effort.
-Ben

First thing is to disable sleep mode for a period of inactivity. Instead use turning monitor off for a certain duration.
Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file) then unzip(extract by right clicking) and run Bluescreenview.
Go to Edit -Select All, File and Saved Selected Item. Create a name for saved logs as Report.txt. Copy/Paste ALL the created report on your next post.

FWIW: If I remember correctly...some sleep mode problems relate to damaged video drivers. I would try uninstalling the current drivers, then reinstalling either same or current version for that system.

Thanks for the suggestion, Louis. What would be the safest way to go about uninstalling my current driver and updating? As far as I know my NVIDIA driver has an autoupdate feature..? or am I missing the point?

I would not use the autoupdate feature.

IME, when a driver becomes damaged, such proesses may encounter problems...further increasing my frustration :). So I routinely remove the old drivers (on the premise that they are now damaged, since they didnt' cause problems before)...then reboot and reinstall the drivers from either the CD which contains the original drivers or drivers which I have already downloaded from the system or motherboard manufacturer.

If the system is custom-built...I would get drivers from the motherboard manufacturer...or the video card manufacturer, if I have an actual, physical video card which I have installed (as opposed to onboard video).

If the system is a Dell, HP, etc. system...I would always get drivers from that respective website, if I didn't want to use the CD provided with system purchase.

This is only my way of doing this...others approach it differently :).

Thanks Louis. I'll do that asap. I have an older computer how should I go about determining what other drivers may need updating? Just for future reference...

Drivers don't need "updating", IMO...unless an update is issued to correct a fault in the previous version or add some new capability not previously available.

Drivers need to be uninstalled and replaced...when they cause problems in the system, with recognition that the reason problems now occur is probably due to the fact that the drivers have become damaged and cannot respond properly.

Please do the following. :)

1.Would you please tell me which antivirus applications you have had previously on this machine any and all.The reason I ask is because some like to hang around after you uninstall via add remove programs and require the use of removal tools.

2.Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig (right click run as admin), then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there, after hiding microsoft services? Please post back to us in a vertical list.

3.Please download MiniToolBox HERE http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe When the box opens click save file, save it to the desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

Flush Dns
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

4.What kind of computer do you have exactly desktop laptop?Make model?Example Compaq Presario C700

5. Download and run start up lite in the link below after running reboot and open msconfig and under startup tab what entries are still checked?
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/startuplite

If a desktop unplug the tower open up the side.Get can of compressed air and blow out the machine and reseat the ram modules video card etc,see video Plug it back in and see how it goes.

Please read fully and post all information requested. :) :)

I would also like you to run sfc /scannow open command prompt by hitting start in the lower left hand corner and then typing cmd right click then run as admin and type sfc /scannow then hit enter. After that re open command prompt with same instructions and type chkdsk /r and hit enter it should ask you to schedule check disk on next reboot hit y to confirm then reboot. :)

Do you have anything connected to your computer via usb?The blue screen report tells me that your problems are usb related. You may also need to update your network driver.

I'll start working on those things immediately after I get home tomorrow. This is all I can really tell you without downloading programs (will do tomorrow):

My computer is a desktop. HP Media Centre m7747c but I've changed a lot of the parts that it came with many years ago. It's got Intel core 2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13 GHz (two of them), NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, 2GB ram... new corsair power supply which is giving me way more than enough power... yeah... Is there a simple way of listing all specs of my computer without typing it?

as far as USB devices go, directly into my computer I've got my iPhone 30pin cable*** which is plugged into a dock which is plugged into some speakers and subs, I've got a Razer Lycosa keyboard, Razer Carcharius headset, and Razer Death Adder mouse, all USB and finally if you want to count it a network printer and network 1TB external HDD plugged into the router.

***Quick though on USB devices causing problems, only unusual thing I've noticed is that my iPhone isn't being detected when I plug it in.. Unusual.. Just thought of this while typing.. may be irrelevant.

Antivirus programs I've had in the past are Shaw Secure powered by F-Secure which was recently discontinued so they (in my opinion) downgraded me to Shaw Secure powered by McAfee (removed old one), and I used to have a copy of Malwarebytes installed for troubleshooting on the only virus I've ever had to deal with (MBR root kit). I've also got the windows firewall active but that's not really an AV.
