Hello guys,
I just saw a chat tab here at BC. What type of chat is it? Is it IRC? IF it is IRC isnt it dangerous to use (someone told me) IRC chat? Anyone please try to help me. Thanks in advance.

It is IRC chat.

IRC is no more dangerous to use than the Internet is. If you use a properly configured client (or the built-in webchat) and follow the same basic privacy rules as with surfing you should be fine.

Please be sure to read the Chat Instructions thoroughly before connecting; particularly the rules section.

Actually IRC can be dangerous as your IP info is available to anyone who does a /whois on you... (IF YOU GO OUT DIRECTLY WITH AN IRC CLIENT)

I dont use IRC very much...

Your IP is available to anyone you connect with regardless of what kind of chat client you use, its just easier with some. Thats point one. Point two, Im not to familiar with IRC but it seems to me thats actually an option that the server chooses to allow or dissallow (showing of the IP address with the whois command) point 3, if your on a dynamic IP with your service provider your IP will likely change next time you log on to your computer anyway. If your all that worried about it, logon through a proxy, but I can say this-BCs IRC chat is very secure, I've never been hacked through it.

BC chat is on a network called geekshed, that hides the IP by default. Yes your IP may be visible to the network admins there, but nobody doing a whois will be able to see your IP (only you, yourself can see it, when you do a whois on yourself.)

See here for a more in depth explanation from geekshed: http://www.geekshed.net/2010/02/can-people-on-geekshed-see-my-ip-address/

You expose your IP when emailing. The BC chat room is very friendly and and great place for one to one help. In 15 years i have never experienced or know a case that IRC was dangerous.
