While booting a HP Laptop computer I get a Non System Disk or Disk error message.

What utility can I download to a cd to see if the hard drive has errors?

It is a Compaq nc6230 running Windows Xp.

I do not know much more about this computer as it belongs to a friend.

You have a hd thats not being detectd by youre machine.
if you comfortable with working inside youre machine open the case uplug youre two IDE cables ie hard drive and cd IDE's and reconnect them.
Go into BIOS (F1 I think) and see if you can then detect it -
XP SP3 Pro Desktop - Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium Toshiba Laptop - Malwarebytes - SUPERAntiSpyware - Microsoft Security Essentials -
HiJack This - SpeedFan - Cannon Printer - ATF Cleaner - TFC Cleaner - ORCA and Internet Explorer Browsers -
Secunia PSI - And I Use GOOGLE -

Thanks, I will try removing the hd and putting it back in.

the computer will boot up to the windows logo then it will re-boot with the non system disk.

I have checked all of the drives and no other disks are in the system.

F10 will get me in the bios so I can modify the boot order.

Is it possible to create an XP boot disk from my desktop (Gateway) that will work on the laptop?

Only from a totally matching system - 32bit or 64bit must match -
XP Pro or Home or Media edition etc must match what you are trying to copy -

HPs are always mongrels to match exactly - It can be done, but do not ask me to replace all the CDs you waste trying to match it,, Ha Ha -
