Hello there!
Annoying problem and we've tried just about everything- even running through everyone else's problems to try to get this to work:
We have just re-installed Windows xp service pack 3 on a Cisnet Pentium 4 tower. When we try and get the audio to work, nothing works. The Sounds and audio device manager keeps saying there is no device installed and it's greyed out. We tried the following steps and still to no avail:
Tried reinstalling drivers.
Went through BIOS to make sure it was enabled.
Checked to make sure the device in question still existed on the motherboard itself (looks as if it's not an aftermarket item- a speedtech p18-110-0007) and it recalls itself in BIOS as ac97.
Checked all the basic functions of the ports, the speakers, etc. and the ports have power as they are sending signal (the usual pop you get when you plug in a device.
Went through msconfig and also made sure the devices were enabled.
We are losing patience quickly as it seems we have tried everything! Any help is appreciated that we haven't tried.
