powerful single wide GPU 6850 wouldn't fit

I'm upgrading my computer and bought a Radeon 6850 but found it wouldn't fit. My PCIe x16 slot is in the first position nearest the CPU and so the fat card bumps the heat sink and won't fit into the slot. What I need is a powerful "single wide" tier 1 or tier 2 graphics card.

It is a Dell 5150, Pentium D, 4 GB RAM, XP

Any suggestions of a card that will work or some other work-around using an adapter or one of the "lesser slots"?

What kind of psu do you have? Keep in mind most stock psus on oem system like dells will not run mid to high end video cards.

Is this a common problem? PCIe x16 slot is too close to the CPU heat sink to allow for a double wide Graphics Card.
Is there a tier 1 or tier 2 gaming card that is single width?

Ok, was just making sure. Finding modern video cards that only fit a single slot-with either AMD or NVIDIA. In fact the last high end card Im aware of that came in a single slot option was the 4850, which newegg no longer carries. For modern cards, the AMD 6770 appears to be the best option of cards that Im finding. Its a low to mid range card (borderline) it has a 850 mhz GPU and 1 gig of GDDR5 video memory, so its not a bad performing card by any means, though it wont compare to a 6850 by any means. I even went through NVIDIAs line up and couldnt find anything (affordable anyway, they did have a single slot 580 for $500)

It is one of those "BTX" formfactor cases. I hate them with a passion. The expansion cards essentially mount upside down, so the heatsinks and fans face the CPU, and hence everything gets in the way.

I saw a thread just now on Toms Hardware that mentions a few:
MSI GTS 450
GALAXY GTX 460 OR 470
EVGA GTX 580 FTW
EVGA 8600 GT

What is the best way to research these?

Is there any kind of flexible adapter that would plug into the PCI slot and allow me to plug in a "normal" double wide card into the adapter? Something to allow me to move over from the CPU?

No there isnt any adaptors not to my knowledge. You may be able to find an aftermarket heatsink that might give you a little leeway, but not likely. You can try doing what I did and going through the inventory of sites such as newegg or tigerdirect, or try www.froogle.com and just typing them in to see what you got-though, in comparison. The 6770 I recomended will beat out a NVIDIA 450 and 8600 pretty easily, and possibly the 460 (though im not sure im a bit behind on nvidia cards) and your 460s on up through the 580s in the list you provided are pretty big bucks. For example, newegg did have a single slot 580 for sale-one by EVGA and one by Zotac as you can see, both are very expensive, and both would be severly bottlenecked by your CPU and memory.

A friend down the hall at work suggested a work-around... replace the heat sink (and the large plastic cage that holds it down) with a CPU fan.
Does anyone have experience replacing heat sink with a fan?

The heatsink would have to have proper mounting holes to hold the fan in place. You could get a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ or one of the new models which i think is the Evo for around $30-40 which should fit.

You'd have to find an aftermarket heatsink that would give you more room-with the layout of the board it may be difficult. Dells never were designed for upgrading but ill look into ot further
