Infected With Something - Don't Know What Computer slow, CPU at 100%, "Quick Scan" takes forever

I ran the Process Explorer and it showed a program called BitMeter was using appx, 95% of the CPU. I uninstalled the program and everything seems to be running at a "normal" speed now - CPU usage is around 10-20%.
FYI, I located the ISO image for the XP Service Pack 3 disc and burned it to a CD, then inserted it when asked. I still got the error message several times, but when I cancelled, the program kept running. At the end, it asked me to insert the Windows XP Professional CD2 to install "clean" files the scan identified (but never listed in a way I could see). Aside from the fact that I don't have a CD (the system was pre-installed), I'm not running Professional, but Media Center, which is the "Home" version. I looked briefly at the Windows forum on this subject and it seems to be a common problem that, apparently, Microsoft hasn't really addressed.
Now I'm wondering if the problems I experienced were caused by BitMeter and not a malware infection. I ran Malwarebytes and didn't seem to turn up anything. Should I retry one of the earlier programs since the system seems to be running much faster now?
In any case, thanks for all your help.
