I only had to do a warranty claim once, and that was for my Dell laptop's power supply. Was pretty painless. :)

Also, I deal with Dell and HP warranties regularly at work, and let me tell you, it's much easier (not to mention faster) working with Dell as opposed to HP.

I recently bought a Dell XPS 17 laptop... I only got the basic warranty. Is there warranty worth getting? It is an extra few hundred dollars, and it has not shipped yet.

That's really up to you. If you don't get it and then have problems after the basic warranty expires, you're screwed. On the other hand, if you do get it and never need it, you've essentially "wasted" that money. It's basically an insurance policy...costs a lot, but gives peace of mind. It's up to you whether it's worth it or not.

I didn't get the extended warranty, but was lucky in that my warranty had 30-ish days left on it when my power supply crapped out. Then again, a new power supply is not all that expensive.

If you've got the $$ (and if you're buying a 17 inch XPS, I'm betting you do ), then I say go for it. I replaced my laptop after 2 years with a custom desktop, so I don't regret not getting the extended warranty.

One more question about there warranty..

I am also moving the HD they are installing to the secondary slot and installing my own crucial m4 SSD as the primary.

Also installing my own upgraded RAM.

Will this void there warranty?

Thanks for all of the information!!

As long as you can put it back as delivered in case you do need warranty then you would be OK.. To put it another way I would not remove anything from the Dell drive and not mention the SSD in case of problems just to be safe.

In the past I've seen Dell refuse support because it was a different windows on the machine.
My first Computer had a Whopping 16K of memory @ 0.89MHz
My first hard drive held 20 Megabytes and never got filled up.

Don't forget to hold onto their memory too.

What I would do is wait to change anything for a little while to be sure all is OK.

HP are just unreliable in general, they break down more then other brands. They also are a lot more complicated to repair.

I personally have never dealt with after sales services & support before for any laptops.

Call them and see how the support is before buying.

If it is a Lenovo Thinkpad, their support is good and they have a good network of local service providers if you ever need warranty support.

Their optional accidental damage warranty is good to if a little pricy. I know of someone that got their Thinkpad rebuilt after they drove off with it on the roof. From what I understand there were more bad parts than good parts.

That drive off with it on the roof seems more common than many realize. I just heard from someone this month that did that and did not remember until the next day when they went to use it. There would have been no warranty in that case since they don't know where it ended up.

Toshiba has several levels of optional warranty.
One is good for accidental damage once a year. one just extends the regular warranty
and one adds priority rush repair to the others.
