After a lot of work, a combination of the original post you linked to plus two of the respondents' tweaks enabled me to solve the "WindowsUpdate_80070005" and "WindowsUpdate_dt000" issues. (Thank you)
But I'm still back to where I was before ... I can't install SP1. Still error code 0x800f0826. I've tried every troubleshooter and update I can get my hands on with no luck. All of the other updates have been installed. The most recent time I tried to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, this is the log I got:

The reading I've done about this issue seems to center around a conflict with ATI drivers, but I'm pretty sure there are no ATI products on this machine, so I doubt that's it.

Yes, most likely it is caused by a driver conflict (I saw some mentions that DriverKeeper software can cause this issue, however that isn't installed either). I wonder if DriveImageXML might be responsible.

Uninstalled DriveImageXML but update still won't install.
To be honest with you, I think I'm done with this project. He really wants his computer back, I'm tired of having it in my office, and you've invested WAAAAY more of your time than we deserve. I'm going to explain to him what's going on and give him the option of taking it home with a known problem (which is still better than the way we brought it in).
Is there anything else I need to do (uninstall programs, remove logs, etc.) to unwind from the removal of the original problem?

All of the steps in Post #22 have been done or will be done in the next 10 minutes.
Thank you for all of your help. I REALLY appreciate it. I hope to be able to "pay it forward" someday.
Have a great holiday season.
