Hi,

Started at above and followed instructions for preparations.

Tried to run GMER twice, but crashed computer and caused reboot both times within a couple of minutes of starting it

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
    
  • DDS.pif
  
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  
• Notepad will open with the results.
  
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:


Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

Still need help
I'll get to running another dds and GMER tonight after work ...need to get to the office now
Note that I disable CD emulation and have not run any other diagnostics since the log was posted ...tried GMER several times and it did not work.

I do not have the original Windows disks handy.

• Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  
• Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.

If GMER won't run for you, use this instead:

Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.

• Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  
• Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  
• On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

Had some trouble .... ended up downloading it on another computer and moving to the desktop of the infected computer via a mem stick.
On first try, computer hung up ....rebooted computer, then seemed to run ok

Please do this next:

Re-Run aswMBR

• Click Scan
  
• On completion of the scan, click the FIX button,
  
• There is a slight pause after clicking the 'FixMBR' button.
  
• Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  
• Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.
  
  Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  
  
• Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Now computer will only go to Windows recovery panel and keeps re-booting ... If I start normally, it gets to log on screen then blue screens and reboots

From the Recovery Panel, choose Repair your computer > Startup Repair

If that gets you in, go ahead and continue on with ComboFix.

No luck ...
On start-up I was able to slelect the repair option and I did
When it booted to the login screen, only one profle showed up ("OTHER" instead of the normal (4) we have
Clicked on it, but wanted a Pass Word .... no control alt del
I powered down with power button.

On 3 or so reboots I get the "windows error recovery screen" with no repai option ....onle start in Safe mode (w, w/o network, command prompt) and normal

did several normal ....gets to log in screen with the 4 identities then blue screens and dumps memory and restarts.

Did repair.
Comes to a screen that says "OTHER USER" and when I click on it, it asks for User ID and PW

If I click the arrow, I get the OK and "Windows Security please enter user name and PW"

I did not think there was a Username and PW ....I put in various combinations that it might be if there were on, but no luck.

No idea how to recover a username and PW if one was set up.

Is safe mode a possibility?

Based on your DDS logs, one of your User ID's is Kyle. Did you try that? If you didn't set up a password for that ID, just pressing ENTER should let you in.

If that doesn't work, go ahead and try the safe mode. Let me know if you are able to get into the PC either way.

Hi RP,

Putting "Kyle" into user name for the "other user" results in message "specified domain either does not exist or cannot be contacted" ...both when I hit enter with no PW or guess at passwords that could have been set...


BUT ....safe mode worked .... I'm at the desktop and can open a text file ....no networking, so I'm writing from another computer in the house. ... will need to download and save scripts to USB and bring them to the laptop that way.

Not smooth ...but

Attached is zip of peek.bat log ... crashed site on multiple tries of copy/paste ...too big to attach without zip.

Ended up having to reboot in safemode w/networking to get combofix to desktop.
Screen came up to upgrade to lates version ...said yes ...seemed to complete ...said update is complete.
Had the little blue administrators screen, but error came up "Windows cannot find combofix ....."

When I downloaded, only got to 99% and hung up. .... deleted it from desktop and tried the other link ...same thing.

It downloaded ok to the stick, but for whatever reason computer could not read the file from the stick to put it on the desktop ...even after reboot to safemode with networking.

Computer is running in safe mode with networking.
