Hey Bleeps! An Acer aspire laptop with windows 7 I received because of a failing hard disk now has to have the h/d replaced. I did a backup and bought a new h/d for it. My question is, how do I reformat this h/d? I do not have the original windows 7 disk as the OS came pre-installed on the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reason for edit: Moved to Internal Hardware from System Building.

Funny thing about "The Blues", You can listen to them when your Happy, Sad, Angry, or just plain Blah. It's a non discriminating mood music. :) HP Pavilion a1600n Windows XP media edition 2 gigs ram 1TB with external hard drive. Or depends on which computer I plug in that day....

You typically reformat using the OS disc, but since you don't have one, that can be a problem. Using a Linux Live CD with GParted could also work getting the drive formatted.

Easiest if not fastest method is get the recovery discs from Acer. Probably cheaper too.

How bad is the original hard drive? Any chance it could be cloned to the new drive? You could also ask the previous owner if they made the recovery discs.

If the recovery partition is in good enough shape to clone you could be good to go.

The first thing I did when I got my new laptop, 2 years ago already, was make two sets of recovery DVDs using good quality Verbatim DVD blanks, Good quality means not the cheapo Verbatim life series BTW.
My first Computer had a Whopping 16K of memory @ 0.89MHz
My first hard drive held 20 Megabytes and never got filled up.

If you don't have an OS disc, what are you going to do after you format?

I actually made a back up disk of the "Restore to Factory" when I backed up all the files on it. Acer gives you that option. Hopefully it works as the old H/D was on it's way out when I did that. Looking at the files on the back-up disks, it seems to be there. Keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry for the late reply as Work and school at night has taken up a lot of my time.

Sorry for the bump, this topic can be closed now as I installed a new H/D and a fresh bought Win 7 install. Thanks for all your help.
