When posting your problem, do not run and post a ComboFix log. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.

To receive help, you should instead provide a detailed description of your problem, detailed word-for-word error messages that you are receiving, screenshots of strange behaviour, and your operating system. This information is much more useful to our helpers than a ComboFix log.

Hello all, I am a first time user here at Bleeping Computer which a good friend of mine recommended. My knowledge of computers for word of a better term would be medium. I'm trying to get a small business off the ground and have no money for expensive software.

I would appreciate some assistance/suggestions on how to rid myself of a virus/malware problem I believe I got from a pirate music CD (Ramones) I bought in Bali.

I will attempt to take baby steps on how & what I've done and to rid my beautiful new computer of this hideous infection.

I loaded a music CD into my drive on my laptop using Windows Media Player and listened to a few songs suddenly the music went crazy sounding like devil speak and the drive started making noise, so I ejected the CD and as I was deciding from music on my hard drive I noticed nearly all my icons (non music files) had been turned to music files. Except MS Office, .pdf's, jpg's. When trying to open nearly all my programs Windows Media Player launches with another window stating that WMP cannot launch this file because it has a file extension (.lnk) I have noticed a lot of the programs I try to launch have (x86)with in the file name I'm not sure if this is anything or not.

My friend suggested I use Malwarebytes to rid this disease which I tried and it didn't find any infections or even cookies. I then loaded SpyHunter 4 which found Backdoor.IRCbot.gen!M & Trojan. Vundo.gen!C & Malware.generic & a whole lot of cookies but I needed to pay to get rid of them. I then thought I removed SpyHunter 4 in the correct manner but noticed it is still there.

If anyone can assist I'd extremely thankful.

Cheers

Hello, I moved you from WIN7 to Am I Infected.

You may want to scan that CD.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.

Thanks for your reply. With the help of a friend, we ran the tools you suggested, but nothing out of place was evident (ESET found nothing). A bit more digging revealed that it was a corrupt registry entry defaulting all the shortcut icons to whatever was selected in "Open with..." We were able to reset the entries from a similar issue reported on sevenforums.com

Many thanks for your help and suggestions - crisis averted this time!

Cheers
