BleepingComputer.com: Want to Upgrade Processor

Hey guys im looking to upgrade my processor, would like to keep it as cheap as possible max about $250. I've never done this before and i'm not too sure what exactly I need to do. I see on the product specifications page (listed below) the compatible upgrades but i'm not sure if there are any other components I need to look for. I was wondering what i should look for to make sure the processor will run on my pc as well.

I currently have an HP a6600f. Product specifications here. I'm not using the hard drive that came with it, i'm using a hard drive with windows xp on it, not sure if that matters. I also have a Nvidia geforce 9500gt 1GB.

I'm looking to upgrade for the current generation of pc games(i.e. Skyrim). I was thinking I would like to have a minimum power of dualcore at 2.5 Ghz, But would like Dualcore at 3.0 or more preferably.

Just to let you know, you currently have a dual core processor. I have found a compatible processor but it is currently out of stock which means you will have to wait. But mainly for games you would want to focus on upgrading the graphics card.

Sorry updated OP with graphics card. Also I know I have a dual core right now but it shutters while running newer games like Shogun 2 Total war, or even Oblivion. I realize I don't have the greatest Graphics card, but its more than capable for most games out. I've done allot of tests and find newer games always max my CPU usage in task manager.

Then you would upgrade to the processor i suggested to you but you would have to wait till it comes in stock unless you find somewhere else that sells that exact model.

what exactly do i need to look for in a new processor? is that he only one that will work?

A Intel Core 2 Duo E8xxx (Wolfdale).

i cant use any of the conroe ones?

Conroe is older and slower then Wolfdale.

According to HP's website, the following CPU's can be used:

Socket type: 775
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades
Intel Core 2 Duo (Wolfsdale) E8xxx
Core 2 Duo E6xxx (Conroe) up to E6850
Pentium E2xxx series (Conroe) with Dual Core technology up to E2160
Core 2 Duo E4xxx (Conroe)
Celeron 4xx series (Conroe) up to Celeron 450


That said, the CPU's at the top of the list are newer.
