“Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked.”

I kind of expected this from VALVe with how they handle IT Related things like Online Harassment and people who cyberbully others. Time to go home and change all my passwords.

This would be one of those examples where a suggestion I had made to them numerous times would be a good thing to have, and that is a mass message to all their users via Steam Friends.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Apparently they have disabled changing of passwords. I went to change mine, and got the following:

The database was compromised but there's no word yet on if the attackers have cracked the card numbers and passwords. So there's solace in that, I suppose.

If it looks like I know what I'm doing, there's a pretty good chance the only reason for that is because
I once asked someone to run chkdsk /r and a BC Advisor smacked me in the back of the head.

I'm glad my kids' Steam accounts were paid for with their safe (empty) bank accounts and easily expendable debit cards. At least cancelling those cards won't affect our household bill payments, etc.
