Instruction at referenced memory ...could not be read

I hope I'm not repeating an already posted problem. When I boot up (XP Pro - SP3 with up to date updates)I've started to get the following error message "The instruction at "0X1007ba84" referenced memory at "0Xffffffff" the memory could not be read. Press OK to terminate or Cancel to debug" I always click cancel to debug and windows loads normally with no further problems. Not understanding this message, I'm worried that it is a portent of worse things to come. Any advice would be welcome.

1) At exactly what point in the boot process do you get the message?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

The error message occurs just as the blue log in screen appears. When I press cancel to debug, the message disappears, and I'm able to put in my password and everything proceeds as normal from that moment.

I'm not aware of any new software , hardware, viruses or errors since this started happening (today was the 4th day in a row I got the message)and only I use the computer.

Does it appear if you boot to safe mode?

The problem does not appear if I boot in Safe Mode. However it still occurs in normal boot mode.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.
After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Hi, Thanks for your advice. I managed to identify the programme which was causing the problem (Rapport)and decided I could live without it. Since deletion of the programme everything runs fine. Thanks again.
