The following are its properties.
Dimensions: 2572 X 1928
size : 310KB

By looking at these, can we tell what is the MegaPixel value of the camera using to take this picture ?

From the dimensions of your image, i'd guess about 4.9 (or 5) Megapixels.
That is,
2572 x 1928 = 4,958,816
=
4.9
consider the dimensions to be an array of elements, and the megapixel value to be the total of all those elements.
If you shoot at a different ratio the value will change, even though your camera tells you it's 5MP.
So the megapixel value is basically telling you the highest number of elements, or pixels, that it can display per image, which is the dimensions in pixels.

hope that helps

The MP of the camera could be more than what sychaeus has mentioned, but it cannot be less

if you would like for information on your picture, upload it here and it will tell you everything possible.. maybe even the camera name if the file hasn't been copied out of its original container.

hi mr roman.
I have uploaded a photograph onto
http://regex.info/exif.cgi
whose dimensions were
640 * 180 pixels and the picture is of 3MP
and the website tells that the camera used is canon DIGITAL IXUS 80IS.
But google helped me to identify that canon DIGITAL IXUS 80IS is 8 MP camera ..
I am highly confused.
Please help me in understanding.

Some cameras have the option to take pictures using a smaller resolution, in order to keep the filesize down and make room for more.
It is possible that the owner lowered the settings.
the picture you uploaded, was it previously cropped? 640 * 180 sounds like it was cropped, unless you meant 480. In which case, was it re-sized down to that size?

thanks for the help mr roman.
i think there was a typo from my end. it was 640*480 i suppose.
could be the owner must have lowered the settings.
Thanks for opening the horizon of my thought process.
feels good to be a part of bleeping computer
