Hi

Before posting this I saw many asking the same thing, it seems like a recent virus, before coming here I ran Mallware bytes (updated it first), ad aware, spybot search destroy, combobix, hjthis, but no luck, id like to start from scratch and hope someone can help me. From my research its a new virus and the big programs arent detecting even the virus scanner from microsoft.

I am using vista

The symtoms: I go to google in FF or IE and I do any search, I click on results and it goes to spam pages
IE opens in background I can only see it if I look in task manager and I can hear audio playing, not non stop but it comes and goes
Host file has sites in it that are spam, its obvious this virus changes your permissions as I cannot change the host file only in safe mode and even then the virus doesnt go away (meaning even if I fix the host file and clean it up leaving only the data thats in a clean host file the virus stays)

I didnt want to post in a thread thats already open for this issue so im starting a new one

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Please do the following

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

You can get help on disabling your protection programs here

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.

Hi,

Please run the following:

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
    • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
    • Then click Continue > Reboot now

  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

NEXT

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Do you have your installation disk?

We need to do a fix from the recovery environment:

You will need to insert your installation DVD and restart, then press any key when prompted to boot from the CD.

At the Install Windows screen, select Repair your computer

Select a language, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next

It will ask for a password > if you have one > enter it now, or just hit OK if you don't have one.

In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt

Copy/paste the following commands at the command prompt:

bootrec /fixmbr and then press ENTER
bcdedit /set {default} winpe no and then press ENTER

You should see "The operation completed successfully"

Type EXIT at the command prompt, then select the RESTART button to reboot your system normally.

a big thanks as the problem is fixed!

here is some more info as this may or may not be helpful

1. your wrote
bootrec /fixmbr and then press ENTER
bcdedit /set {default} winpe no and then press ENTER

bootrec /fixmbr and then press ENTER - worked
bcdedit /set {default} winpe no and then press ENTER - told me didnt recognize, keep in mind I couldn't copy and paste so I might of mistyped it

But the first line did the trick

2. I have a HP, it does not come with a disk, but by clicking f11 or by doing f8 non stop at reboot it allows you to get into system recovery mode and its just like having a disk

3. you wrote

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.

because my computer was infected when I clicked that link it redirected my browser to some fake anti virus site, instead I right clicked on the link and selected copy link location and then pasted it into the broswer

I must say that ESET found the viruses others didnt, and it did remove it, but upon restart the virus was still there, I reran ESET and it showed the sstem was clean but the virus was still lurking

The fixmbr saved the day and you are to thank for it, I am very very grateful!
