This is a computer on which Vista x64 originally was installed. I upgraded to Windows 7x64 with the upgrade DVD. It's based on an Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard running SATA RAID0 on a pair of 1 TB HDDs with 6GB of RAM and 2 Pioneer DVD drives. My graphics card is a Matrox M9210 PCIe x16 with dual displays.

The computer worked fine until recently, when EAC and dBpoweramp began freezing when ripping CDs. Acronis True Image also freezes when I try to write a bootable CDR. These functions don't work any better in Safe Mode. Other programs function normally, and Acronis works fine except when trying to write to media.

I did a System Restore to the earliest Restore Point that worked, but it wasn't early enough. I have an Acronis complete backup from 6 months ago when I was ripping regularly without incident, but would rather try to fix the problem than backing up the whole drive, then merging in my data files from a current backup.

I have scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG 2012, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Memtest 86+ (for 3 hours), all of which found no problems. Here are the WhoCrashed reports since the System Restore, both apparently from the same crash while trying to write an Acronis CDR in Safe Mode:

windows version: Windows 7 Service Pack 1, 6.1, build: 7601
windows dir: C:\Windows
CPU: GenuineIntel Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz Intel586, level: 6
8 logical processors, active mask: 255
RAM: 6433091584 total

On Thu 11/3/2011 12:29:48 AM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\110211-57876-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x7CC10)
Bugcheck code: 0x1E (0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode program generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver which cannot be identified at this time.

crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: iastor.sys (iaStor+0x4DD5A)
Bugcheck code: 0x1E (0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys
product: Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver
company: Intel Corporation
description: Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver - x64
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode program generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: iastor.sys (Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver - x64, Intel Corporation).

Google searches haven't turned up a case exactly like this, and I'm unsure of what to do next. Expert help would be much appreciated.

John

Hello, is there any way possible that you can try a different CD burner to see if it crashes no matter what ROM is in there burning.

I recovered a full Acronis backup from 6 months ago, updated programs, then updated data files from a last minute Acronis backup by mounting the image and transferring files. Now everything works, and the computer runs much faster than it was running before the restoration. It was easier to use backup recovery than to try to troubleshoot the problem.
