We installed Windows 7 on a 3 year old laptop we purchased from www.techtradepartners.com and it appears to run much faster than XP. Could this be the computer, or is it windows performing better?

Hello 411 and Welcome -

Done the correct way, your Windows7 will seem to run a bit better / faster than your older XP.
Windows 7 will use DirectX 11 which is better than DirectX 10 that you could only use on XP.
You will find from this that the graphics in Windows 7 look a lot better, and this improves your overall view now.

I hope you enjoy your Windows 7, and please ask any questions you may have as you find your way around your new system -
