This was given to me by a friend. Computer turns on and seems to boot, but screen won't turn on. All lights turn on, hard drive seems to spin. I tried a external monitor, nothing. Tried turning the laptop on, pulling the battery, shutting it down and restarting it after 20 seconds, nothing. It is a HP Pavilion dv7-1157cl Notebook, Vista, 4GB RAM. Anyone have this problem before? I would love to fix this laptop.

The chipset video might be busted since both video output are black.

He finished using it, shut it down and the next time he went to boot it the screen never started. It looks like it boots up, don't here any sounds, but all the lights come on and hard drive light flickers like its working. There is a HP logo that lights up on the cover. Tried hooking an external monitor to it, but nothing. Thanks for your help.

There are function keys on keyboard to enable external monitor to work or display. Other thing on laptop screen problem is the LCD Video cable could be loose or faulty.

I have thought about looking into the loose video cable. Going to take it apart this weekend. Do you know what functions keys enable the external monitor? I will look it up on Google too.
