Blue screen hang on boot with no error messages

Vista home edition service pack 2

Hope you guys can help a technophobe , on boot the system hangs on the blue welcome screen prior to user logon

Malware scan is clear, registry scan is clear. Tried sytem restore which restores the laptop but on next boot the same error occurs, configuring updates messages occurs on shutdown

Tried startup repair which is clear

Tried switching off auto updates and defender, still have the issue. No updates were installed when the error occured

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Hi Allan, thanks for the reply but dont think this problem is the BSOD issue as the blue screen has no messages or errors whatsover but I have followed your instructions, the dates on the crashes dont seem to correspond with my problem which first occured on the 8/10/2011

Any help would be very much appreciated Buddy

Sorry, misunderstood your original post. Since you can boot to safe mode, please try this:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.
After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

looks as though the bottom tab use "orginal boot configuration" is greyed out and therefore cannot uncheck all three
